But a new kind of black gold is brewing in our city. It’s a blend of slow roasted coffee beans, locally sourced dairy products, and highly trained baristas that are drawing people away from the national coffee chains like Starbucks and into our Seattle-like craft coffee shops.
Over the summer, I went on a quest to experience the top five coffee shops in Houston for latte art. I interviewed baristas and learned the latte art process from bean to brew to beautiful creations of art. I spoke to a couple of the owners and of course, sampled the coffee. Without a doubt, these are the best coffee shops in the city for taste, ambiance, and latte art!
Blacksmith
Blacksmith in Houston’s Montrose district is a craft coffee shop that specializes in espresso-based beverages. David Buehrer, Blacksmith’s owner and co-founder of Greenway Coffee Company, believes in using high-quality products from locally sourced producers. His attitude for excellence radiates throughout Blacksmith’s personnel and carries an essence of style and grace. Blacksmith’s brownstone decor with pop-styled art creates a relaxing environment to socialize with friends on the outdoor patio or connect with a date over coffee. Go for brunch and enjoy a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit with a latte.

Catalina Coffee Shop
Catalina Coffee Shop located in Houston’s Sixth Ward is a quaint escape where coffee connoisseurs, artists, and bookworms mix and mingle. The owner, Max Gonzalez, was one of Houston’s first entrepreneurs to bring Seattle’s coffee culture to Houston. After experimenting with roasting coffee beans, Gonzalez perfected his small-batch roasting process and opened the Amaya Roasting Company to service Catalina Coffee and several Houston restaurants.
Catalina Coffee resembles a Seattle coffee shop with its high rafter ceilings, exposed brick walls with art for sale, and industrial vintage accents. Although Catalina Coffee is a small space, they’ve done an exceptional job utilizing their indoor and outdoor seating. Try a latte with an almond croissant for a moment of sheer bliss.
