Easy Homemade Apple Pie is a classic dessert for our “Recipes Every Girl Should Know” series. I love to serve this American treat all year long for Sunday dinners, the Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving. Homemade apple pie pairs well with vanilla bean ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce. You can also opt for a brown sugar crumble topping, as I did for this recipe!
Last week, the Pazazz Team sent me a box of Pazazz apples to try. This new sustainably grown apple is similar to Honeycrisp apples. Pazazz apples have a unique sweet yet tart taste. It’s the perfect apple for your Easy Homemade Apple Pie!
So, let’s get baking and wow your friends and family with this tasty dish!
Easy Homemade Apple Pie with

TOTAL TIME: 2 hr
Author: Taste and See Life
Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Serves: 6
INGREDIENTS
- 2 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts (1 box)
Apple Pie Filling
- 6 cups peeled and sliced apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons lemon zest
Brown Sugar Crumble
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cubed chilled butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Line the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish with parchment paper.
- Place the refrigerated pie crust in the pie dish, prick the bottom with a fork, and crimp the edges. Bake the pie crust for 8 minutes and set aside to cool.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, toss the apples, lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg.
- Layer the pre-baked pie shell with the apple pie filling.
- Roll out the second pie crust and cut it into strips. Weave the strips of pie crust to create a lattice design, and crimp the edges of the pie crust with your fingers.
- In a small mixing bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, and cubed butter.
- Spread the brown sugar crumble over the top pie crust.
- Bake for 20 minutes, then cover the pie edges with strips of foil to prevent burning. Continue baking the pie for 25 more minutes.
- Set aside to cool for 30 minutes to an hour before serving.
I modified this recipe from Pillsbury Perfect Apple Pie. I reduced the sugar, added lemon zest, and increased the lemon juice. The brown sugar topping enhanced the flavors of sweet and tangy Pazazz apples.
You can also make the filling ahead of time. The day before baking the pie, store the peeled and sliced apples in lemon juice in the refrigerator. You can store the dry ingredients for the pie filling in an airtight container as well. You’ll love these time-saving meal preps!
