Replacing a Flood Damaged Car

With nearly every neighborhood in and around the Houston area impacted by flooding, you may be wondering how to repair or replace your flood damaged car. It’s estimated that over 500,000 vehicles were ruined by Hurricane Harvey including vehicles at new and used car dealerships. That’s why I’ve partnered with Momentum Volkswagen of Upper Kirby to share a few tips to help you with replacing a flood damaged car. 

Tips to Replacing a Flood Damaged Car

1. Determine if your flood damaged car is salvageable. Use State Farm Insurance’s Vehicle Flood Damage Checklist to conduct a preliminary survey of the extent of your car’s damage. Then have your car towed to your dealership or auto shop and examined by a professional mechanic. Be sure not to start your car’s engine if your car endured water damage!
2. Contact your insurance company immediately to see if your insurance will cover your flooded car. Per the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI), if you have comprehensive auto coverage, you’re covered for flood damage to your car. You can find answers to commonly asked insurance questions about flood damaged cars on TDI’s Take5 post called “My Car Was Flooded”.  
3. Learn to spot flood-damaged vehicles before purchasing a used car. Progressive Insurance says to look for obvious signs of damage: dried mud or rust in the glove compartment, trunk or under the dashboard, seats or carpeting. Also, look for any discolored or loosely fitting mismatched interior carpet.
4. Buy only from a reputable car dealer. If you are buying a used car from a flood disaster area, ask to see the Carfax and ask the dealer if the car has flood damage. Get the disclosed information in writing and have a professional mechanic inspect the pre-owned car before purchasing. 
5. Ask the dealership about flood assistance rebates, monthly promotional incentives, and finance options. If you live in a flood prone area, you may want to consider gap insurance for your new car. Per TDI, if you have a gap policy, it will pay the difference between what you owe on your loan and your car insurance settlement amount when your car is totaled in an accident or flood.
